And few places celebrate the ocean better than Monterey Bay, where whale watching season and World Ocean Month are well underway

Thanks to the deep Monterey Submarine Canyon just offshore, marine life congregates surprisingly close to land, making the area one of the best places in North America to spot whales.

Monterey Bay is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and responsible tour operators follow guidelines designed to protect marine mammals and minimize disturbances.

Humpback whales are common throughout the summer and fall, while blue whales typically arrive from July through October.

Recent sightings in early June have included humpback whales and large pods of dolphins.

Dolphins, sea otters, sea lions, and countless seabirds often make appearances too.

If renting a car isn’t in your travel budget or you just want to enjoy the scenery, several highly-rated tour companies pick up in downtown San Francisco and take visitors to Carmel, Monterey, and Big Sur.

You might also enjoy a visit to the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, a nice alternative for small children or seasick-prone travelers.

For travelers planning a weekend in Carmel-by-the-Sea or Monterey, adding a whale-watching excursion is one of the easiest ways to experience the magic of California’s coast while gaining a deeper appreciation for the ocean we all share.
