In a recent roundup of America’s best lakes for a scenic summer getaway, the magazine highlighted Lake Tahoe for its famously clear water, mountain scenery, and endless opportunities to paddle, hike, swim, and simply relax.

Straddling the California-Nevada border, Lake Tahoe is North America’s largest alpine lake and one of its clearest, with visibility that can exceed 60 feet.

National Geographic singled out the lake’s turquoise waters and outdoor activities, but anyone who has watched the sun rise over Emerald Bay or spent an afternoon at Sand Harbor probably won’t be surprised.

The publication also noted Tahoe’s appeal as a year-round destination, with skiing and snow sports replacing paddleboards and beach towels once winter arrives.

One of Tahoe’s greatest strengths is that it can be whatever travelers want it to be, any time of year.

Families love the clear water, sandy beaches, and daytime boat cruises. Couples come for romantic sunset cruises and lakeside tables. Outdoor enthusiasts tackle everything from clear kayaking and mountain biking to river tubing on the Truckee. And that’s just the summer.

The only downside? National Geographic’s endorsement might add to the summer stress on an already delicate ecosystem.

Consider visiting Lake Tahoe responsibly.
