The Mess Hall Presidio Opens at Tunnel Tops

One of San Francisco’s best parks is about to get a major food upgrade.

The Mess Hall Presidio opens August 15 at Presidio Tunnel Tops, bringing three restaurants, a café, a cocktail bar, and a specialty market to a restored 1897 Army building overlooking Crissy Field.

The 6,200-square-foot indoor-outdoor space has 88 seats inside and another 120 outside, with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, the Palace of Fine Arts, and even the Transamerica Pyramid.

And this isn’t your typical park concession stand. Three restaurant concepts share one open kitchen.

Boda leans Korean and Japanese with Korean fried chicken, kimchi fried rice and mandu dumplings. Breadwinner handles smashburgers, salads, and East Coast-inspired sandwiches, while Dayboat Seafood taps into San Francisco’s seafood tradition with oysters, cioppino, Dungeness crab sandwiches, and build-your-own hand rolls.

Early birds can stop by beginning at 7 a.m. for Wrecking Ball coffee and pastries from San Francisco favorite Breadbelly. The market will also stock grab-and-go sandwiches, picnic supplies, wine, beer, and other basics—particularly handy if your plan is to grab lunch and spread out on the lawn at Tunnel Tops. The restaurants and bar open at 11 a.m.

Families haven’t been forgotten either. Tunnel Tops already has one of San Francisco’s best playgrounds, and the menu includes kid-friendly choices such as burgers, fries, and—because sometimes you just have to give the people what they want—dino nuggets.

Make this part of a larger Presidio day. Walk along Crissy Field, explore Tunnel Tops and historic batteries, visit top attractions such as the Walt Disney Family Museum, and take a bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge.
