New Bookstore Opens in Tahoe City: Inside The Understory

North Lake Tahoe has a charming new reason to linger in downtown Tahoe City. Opened in late June, The Understory is a cozy, partially underground independent bookstore tucked beneath the historic Trading Post buildings.

Owner Annie Stefani—a former high school librarian and founder of Wonderwood Books—describes it as a “hobbit hole,” and it’s easy to see why. Skylights brighten the intimate space, while carefully curated shelves, a fireplace reading nook, and rotating community book recommendations invite visitors to slow down and stay awhile.

At just 645 square feet, it’s small by design, focusing on thoughtfully selected fiction and nonfiction rather than overwhelming inventory. It’s the first bookstore to open in Tahoe City since 2012 and aims to become a gathering place for readers, book clubs, and anyone who still believes the best travel souvenirs come with pages.

Whether you’re spending a weekend at Lake Tahoe or driving through on a Sierra road trip, The Understory offers the kind of serendipitous discovery that makes travel memorable—a quiet place to browse before heading out to explore the amazing things to do around Lake Tahoe.
