San Francisco Walktober 2026: 30+ Urban Walks to Explore the City
San Francisco is not a city for lazy legs.
Between the hills, stairways, and sprawling parks, even a quick stroll can turn into a workout. But in October, there’s an actual reason to lace up your walking shoes.
Walktober 2026, running October 3–31, is San Francisco’s first monthlong walking festival, with more than 30 organized outings that take participants through neighborhoods, parks, waterfront paths, and some of the city’s less-traveled corners.
Organized by the folks behind the San Francisco Crosstown Trail, the festival includes everything from leisurely art walks and bird-watching excursions to ambitious treks that will give your Fitbit something to brag about.
Among the highlights are a six-mile Muni History Walk on October 10, a free waterfront art stroll on October 15, a tiled stairway walk on October 24, and a nine-and-a-half-mile Beach to Brewery trek on Halloween, ending with a well-earned drink at Standard Deviant Brewing.
The festival also celebrates San Francisco’s growing network of urban trails.
You don’t have to tackle a cross-city walk, either. Many outings cover just a few miles, and there’s plenty of opportunity to discover parts of San Francisco you might otherwise walk right past.
Great for families, and a budget-friendly way to see the city by the bay!
