Flower Piano Returns to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for 11 Days in September
One of San Francisco’s most delightful outdoor music events is returning to Golden Gate Park this September, turning the San Francisco Botanical Garden into a sprawling alfresco concert hall.
Flower Piano runs September 10–20, 2026, with 12 pianos scattered throughout the Botanical Garden’s 55 acres.
Now in its 11th year, the festival combines scheduled performances with one of its most charming traditions: when the professionals aren’t playing, anyone can sit down at a piano and take a turn.
So yes, your kid who has been taking piano lessons for six months can technically perform in Golden Gate Park. Whether the rest of us are ready for that rendition of “Hot Cross Buns” is another question.
What to Expect at Flower Piano 2026
The 12 pianos are tucked among the Botanical Garden’s plant collections, with performances ranging from classical and jazz to opera, contemporary music and more. The idea is to wander the garden, follow the sound of music and stop wherever something catches your ear.
Scheduled performances take place throughout the 11-day festival, but the pianos are also available for public play from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily whenever a performance isn’t underway. Playing is first-come, first-served, and musicians are asked to limit their playing to 15 minutes while others are waiting.
There’s also a Zoox Lounge, a ticketed upgrade in the Celebration Garden with priority festival entry, special performances, food and premium bars, lounge seating, and dedicated restrooms.
A special opening-night celebration takes place there on September 10.

Is Flower Piano Free?
Flower Piano is included with admission to the San Francisco Botanical Garden. San Francisco residents receive free admission to the garden, and advance reservations aren’t required, though reserving ahead can make check-in a little quicker.
Picnicking is encouraged, and visitors can bring outside food and drinks into the general Flower Piano areas, along with folding or camping-style chairs. If you’re planning to stay for a few performances, packing lunch and making an afternoon of it is a very good idea.
And bring layers.
