Sacramento Street in San Francisco’s Presidio Heights district is one of the city’s most scenic, stylish, and family-friendly neighborhood corridors for shopping, dining, and easy wandering.
Located on San Francisco’s north side near Pacific Heights, the stretch of Sacramento Street between Presidio Avenue and Spruce Street is one of the city’s most charming neighborhood corridors.
Tree-lined sidewalks, classic San Francisco architecture, and a mix of independent fashion boutiques, luxe home décor shops, acclaimed restaurants, and even a historic movie theater make it a favorite with locals.
Unlike busier shopping districts like Union Square or Hayes Valley, Sacramento Street is the kind of neighborhood that makes you forget you’re in a big city. It feels less like a commercial strip and more like a little village.
On any given afternoon, you’ll see moms pushing strollers, business meetings over morning bagels, and friends lingering over coffee or long lunches.
Here’s where to shop, dine, and stay on Sacramento Street.

Shopping

Sacramento Street is one of the best places in San Francisco for boutique shopping, with a mix of specialty shops, galleries, and owner-operated stores that offer personal service with their thoughtful inventory. No box stores here!
Dottie Doolittle
A whimsical children’s boutique filled with clothing, toys, books, and gifts for babies and young kids. The shop blends playful design with well-made, practical finds, making it a go-to for stylish San Francisco parents looking for thoughtful gifts and wardrobe-boosting pieces.

Goodbyes
I have been going here for years and can honestly say it is one of the best consignment shops in San Francisco. Goodbyes offers a carefully curated collection of clothing and accessories from mostly upscale brands.
Don’t worry—it’s not one of those stores where you feel like you need to hose off after digging through piles of dirty clothes. Goodbyes is clean, neat, and organized, by size, item, and sometimes color.
You’ll find gowns and cocktail dresses, jeans and tees, bags and scarves, and even a small selection of shoes. If haute couture items are what you’re after, you’ll find some of that too.

Waterlillies Swimwear

I don’t love trying on bathing suits (does any woman over 30?), but Waterlillies, a longtime Sacramento Street shop, is known for its collection of designer swimwear, resort wear, and beach accessories that somehow look good on everyone. And it’s not just lighting and mirrors.
Waterlillies carries a wide range of styles, from sleek one-pieces to bikinis, along with matching cover-ups, which I love, and vacation-ready pieces that feel equally at home on a beach in Saint-Tropez or at a friend’s pool party in Marin.

Hudson Grace
I’ve never met a cloth napkin I didn’t love, and Hudson Grace is the go-to destination for table settings and entertaining essentials, featuring elegant décor, bedding, candles, pantry items, and kitchen pieces that give every aesthetic a touch of relaxed California cool.
Check the event calendar. They are known to hold neighborhood open houses from time to time (sometimes with mimosas)!

ANTHEM
Another sophisticated décor and furniture showroom, ANTHEM stocks gorgeous furniture, lighting, accessories, overstuffed pillows, and unique hostess and wedding gifts. It’s a favorite among interior designers, realtors, and design-savvy locals alike, and the perfect place to pick up a sumptuous San Francisco souvenir for your home.

Dining

Serene Sacramento Street is also one of the best places to eat in Presidio Heights, and in San Francisco, with everything from a Michelin-starred dining room to cozy neighborhood cafes and restaurant bars to belly up to for happy hour drinks and bites.
If you enjoy exploring unique food scenes when you travel, you might appreciate a guided Food and History Tour of Chinatown, or a morning exploring the Ferry Building, another tasty destination filled with artisan shops, cafés, and a weekly farmers’ market.
Sorrel
One of Sacramento Street’s most celebrated restaurants, Sorrel is a refined dining destination known for its seasonal California cuisine with Italian influences. Led by chef-owner Alex Hong, the restaurant has held one Michelin star since 2019, and its tasting menus highlight peak ingredients from local farms and producers.

Spruce
A longtime Presidio Heights favorite, Spruce is where to go for upscale, contemporary American cuisine and an impressive wine program. Its club-like dining room and lively bar attract a stylish neighborhood crowd, too.
And speaking of the bar—it’s a great spot for solo diners (and the omelette is amazing), while the dining room is perfect for date nights or special occasions. Spruce is also open for lunch and weekend brunch.

Magic Flute

A beloved neighborhood institution since 1981, Magic Flute is known for its Italian cuisine and the ‘secret garden’ patio out back, perfect for mimosas with the girls. The menu features house-made pastas, seafood, and Italian classics, and you honestly can’t go wrong here.
Some of my favorites include the saffron arancini with fontina and lemon-garlic aioli, the Italian chopped salad, and the rigatoni alla vodka sauce. The cinnamon-and-sugar beignets with whipped mascarpone are a MUST for dessert.

Boichik Bagels
If you’re craving an authentic New York-style bagel in San Francisco, Boichik Bagels is the place. Known for their crisp exterior and chewy interior, these bagels are kettle-boiled and baked in the traditional style. Their deli sandwiches and spreads make for an excellent grab-and-go lunch before heading to the Presidio or nearby parks.

Garibaldi’s
Though technically located just around the corner on Presidio Avenue near the historic Vogue Theater, Garibaldi’s is a neighborhood gem. It’s been open for more than 35 years, and I feel like I’ve been coming for just about as long. It’s more upscale than casual, but you’ll still feel welcomed like an old friend.
The Italian-Mediterranean-leaning menu features meat, fish, and pasta dishes, but they are especially known for their chicken Milanese. Happy Hour at Garibaldi’s is truly only one hour, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m, and only at the bar, which fills up quickly (sometimes you’ll see people waiting outside at 4:45 p.m.).
Those willing to get there at opening are rewarded with $8 house wine and a budget-friendly menu of snacks and more substantial bites, plus good prices.
Dining at happy hour is one way to save a few bucks if you’re visiting San Francisco on a budget.

Entertainment
The Vogue Theatre

The Vogue Theatre has been a neighborhood fixture since 1912. This intimate single-screen cinema, one of San Francisco’s oldest operating movie theaters, is a dying breed and remains a favorite for Presidio Heights residents and cinephiles.
Throughout the year, The Vogue screens a thoughtful mix of independent films, documentaries, and select mainstream releases.
If you’re spending an afternoon browsing Sacramento Street’s boutiques and cafés, or a romantic weekend in San Francisco, catching an evening film here is a perfect addition to your itinerary.

Stay

The Laurel Inn
For visitors who want to stay in the heart of Presidio Heights, the Laurel Inn is a boutique hotel just steps from Sacramento Street. Each of the 49 rooms and suites is spacious and bright, and some have kitchenettes, making them especially convenient for families or longer stays.
Their nightly happy hour is a nice touch, and the location is one of the best in the city, in my opinion, if you want a residential experience close to transportation and sightseeing.
The Presidio is a few (uphill) blocks away, while the 1 California bus goes to Downtown San Francisco and picks up just outside the hotel.
