Beat the Summer Heat in San Francisco: The Ultimate Cool-cation City

San Francisco’s cool summers aren’t a fluke, they’re geography.

I grew up in L.A., so I’m used to hot summers. But you won’t find that in San Francisco, save for a one or two day blip of warm weather.

While the rest of the country endures high summer temps, San Francisco’s peninsula setting and marine layer give rise to the city’s famous “Karl the Fog,” which keeps summer temperatures normally hovering in the mid-60s and low 70s.

For travelers looking for something more breathable and a place filled with ocean breezes and foggy afternoons, San Francisco offers a cooler alternative to your next summer vacay.

Here are some ideas for a summer in San Francisco—where the fun index is high, but the temperatures aren’t.

Green Space & Shorlines

Since San Francisco is surrounded by ocean water on three sides, the city’s amazing parks and shorelines invite you to stay cool, naturally.

It’s rare that I go out for a walk, even on a sunny day, without a jacket. Between the winds, towering trees, and famously cool microclimates, San Francisco’s outdoor spaces and parks are usually cool, but also a refreshing escape.

Enjoy hiking trails, picnics, beaches, and waterfront paths trails without feeling like you’ll melt after 10 minutes.

👉If you want a dose of heat during your visit, take a day trip from San Francisco to Napa Valley or down to Filoli Estate & Gardens, where the temps will easily feel 10 or 15 degrees warmer.

Sunset Dunes Park

Sunset Dunes, San Francisco’s newest oceanfront park, has become another one of my favorite walks.

Transformed from a former four-lane highway into a two-mile car-free path along Ocean Beach, the paved flat trail is a go-to spot for surfers, cyclists, and families looking to enjoy the coast without the traffic.  It’s also dotted with fun public art

The adjacent Outer Sunset neighborhood is home to cool cafés and independent shops too, including Black Bird Bookstore, one of San Francisco’s best stops for book lovers.

Golden Gate Park

Free to enter and blanketed in cool ocean air, 1,017-acre Golden Gate Park is another naturally “air-conditioned” spot, and a gorgeous San Francisco green space that’s wonderful in any weather, even in the rain.

Towering cypress and eucalyptus trees, shady gardens, and broad lawns keep temperatures comfortably below those in many inland neighborhoods.

Spend the day wandering the Japanese Tea Garden, renting a pedal boat on Blue Heron Lake, exploring world-class museums, or simply stretching out beneath the trees with a picnic.

📍An unforgettable way to explore Golden Gate Park and the nearby Haight-Ashbury neighborhood is on a guided Summer of Love e-bike tour. It’s cool beyond the weather.

The Presidio

San Francisco’s best cool-cation escape may also be its most beautiful.

The Presidio’s forests, coastal bluffs, and seaside walks where the Pacific meets the bay create a naturally cooler microclimate.

Start with a walk along breezy Crissy Field that skims the water all the way to the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Or climb to Presidio Tunnel Tops to watch “Karl”—the city’s famously persistent fog—spill dramatically through the bridge and over the hills.

On warmer afternoons, locals head to Baker Beach, where the ocean breeze pair nicely with one of the best scenic views in the city, making it easy to forget that much of the rest of the state is sweltering.

On the Water

San Francisco doesn’t just sit beside the water—it lives by it.

The Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay shape everything from the city’s famously cool summers to the way locals spend their afternoons. It isn’t just scenery here; it’s part of the city’s rhythm, and an excellent way to cool things down, even when SF gets a little hot.

SpinOut Fitness Waterbike Experience

It’s important to get your exercise in while on vacation , and this is a great way to see the city skyline, keep cool (the water temp does the work for you), and burn some calories in a super fun way.

SpinOut’s 90-minute waterbike excursions put guests right on the bay aboard surprisingly stable floating bikes.

Starting from South Beach Harbor Marina at Pier 40, riders take a casual, comfortable, yet moderately intense waterbike ride. No swimming or cycling expertise is required.

Fjord Sauna & Bay Plunge

Across the bay in Sausalito, Fjord pairs a floating sauna with a plunge into the decidedly chilly waters of San Francisco Bay.

The ritual is simple: warm up, take a breath, jump in. Water temps are around 53–60°F (12–16°C) during the year, which should make you thoroughly invigorated or exceptionally chilled. Possibly both.

It books quickly so browse their online calendar.

Cruise The Bay

For a less strenuous way to get out on the bay, jump on a 1-hour Red & White Fleet Bay Cruise and take in San Francisco’s landmarks, bridges, and skylines.

Daytime trips deliver close-up views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the skyline, while sunset sailings on the Blue & Gold Fleet add changing light over the city.

Or, make it an extra-special occasion and book a brunch or dinner cruise to toast your San Francisco cool-cation.

Bayside Towns

If you want to get out of the city on a day trip, but want to keep the driving to a minimum, hop on a ferry at San Francisco’s historic Ferry Building and crossing the bay to a quaint waterfront town where the air feels fresher, the pace slows, and lunch often comes with sailboats in the background.

Tiburon

The ferry lets you off steps from Tiburon’s compact Main Street, made for wandering, shopping, and bayfront dining with amazing bay and San Francisco views.

Come for lunch, or spend the night at one of two boutique hotels to make the most of the small, charming town before heading back to San Francisco the next day. See my Guide to Tiburon.

It’s less than 30 minutes from San Francisco and feels like a great escape.

Sausalito

One of San Francisco’s favorite escapes (and my home for 10 years) is Sausalito, a touristy town by day (especially on summer weekends) and a sailing town at heart.

But it has a sophisticated edge too. Visitors will love the colorful houseboats, art galleries, restaurants, and wine bars on the waterfront, while a few hotels make an overnight stay feel like a real special-occasion vacation. See my local guide to Sausalito.

👉The views from Sausalito to San Francisco are some of the best you’ll find on the bay, especially if you take a ride up to the Marin Headlands.

📍Several tours from San Francisco offer trips to Sausalito and nearby Muir Woods, where staying cool means standing in the shadow of some of the world’s tallest trees.

Cool Off With Ice Cream

No summer day is complete without ice cream .

Whether you’re craving an inventive scoop, looking for a San Francisco classic, or want to taste them all on a San Francisco Ice Cream Tour, these local favorites are a treat rain or shine.

San Francisco’s Hometown Creamery – In the edible Inner Sunset neighborhood, perfect after Golden Gate Park.

Mitchell’s Ice Cream – A family-owned San Francisco institution with tropical flavors inspired by the city’s diverse communities.

Humphry Slocombe – Find the city’s most creative and playful flavors inside the historic Ferry Building

In San Francisco, cool weather isn’t something to work around. It’s part of the experience, and a nice break from steamy summer destinations.
