Leap Sandcastle Classic San Francisco on Ocean Beach

See Some Serious Sandcastles This Fall in San Francisco at Ocean Beach

Fall in San Francisco isn’t all Fleet Week flyovers and pumpkin patches.

On October 24, 2026, Ocean Beach becomes a giant outdoor art studio for the 44th annual Leap Sandcastle Classic, Northern California’s largest sandcastle competition.

And…it’s FREE.

Where: Ocean Beach at Balboa Street
When: Saturday, October 24, 2026, 11 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Cost: Free

Getting there: Public transportation is highly recommended, as parking at Ocean Beach is limited.

Take the N Judah westbound to its final stop at Judah Street and La Playa Street/Ocean Beach. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk north along the beach to Balboa Street. The N runs through downtown, including Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, and Civic Center stations.

What’s it All About?

Who doesn’t love a sand castle? Or watching teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and local students turn piles of sand into elaborate and creative sculptures!

This year’s theme, “Bay Area Vibes,” takes inspiration from the region’s music, art, culture, architecture, and landmarks, and is sure to be fun for kids and grown-ups, if you’re looking for free and family-friendly fun in San Francisco.

The sandcastle building starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 2:30 p.m., and will be followed by an awards ceremony, with live music and performances throughout the day.

Proceeds raised by participating teams and sponsors support arts education for Bay Area students.
