Where Downtown San Francisco Style Meets Travel Convenience
When it comes to choosing a hotel in downtown San Francisco, Hotel Zelos strikes a balance between sleek boutique design and practical city-center convenience.
Located at the corner of Market and 4th Streets in the historic Pacific Building, Hotel Zelos is at the crossroads of SOMA and Union Square, and is steps from shopping, restaurants, and some of San Francisco’s BEST museums, including SFMoMA, the Jewish Contemporary Museum, and MOaD, and the famous Cable Cars.
It’s also a short hop to Moscone Center and Oracle Park, making it a smart choice for business travelers and SF Giants fans.
The hotel’s restaurant and bar, Dirty Habit, is located on the 5th floor and is known for its dark and vibey setting and selection of cocktails and whiskeys. You can also dine outside on the terrace beneath the city lights.
Hotel Zelos is also known for its affordable pricing and above-average room sizes, too, so check it out the next time you’re planning a trip to San Francisco.

🌟 Hotel Zelos, 12 4th Street, San Francisco🌟
🛏️ Number of rooms & suites: 202
💰 Price: Rates, on average, are $280–$340 per night for a typical stay, but they can vary when large conventions are in town (See my “When to Visit San Francisco” post for more about this). Sometimes you can find rooms for sub $200, and other times they can climb above $500.
Hotel Zelos also imposes a $35-per-room, per-night amenity fee, which includes access to the gym and ‘free’ WiFi, plus a one-time $10-per-room credit at Dirty Habit, the onsite restaurant and bar.
📚 Why book: Location! Location! Location! If you’re in search of a downtown hotel with easy walkability to shopping, museums, conference centers, and more, this is the spot.
The historic façade (originally built in 1907) on the corner of Market and 4th Streets steps from the Powell Street BART station, Union Square, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Moscone Center, Oracle Park, and many other amazing things to do in San Francisco.
Hotel Zelos is ideal if you want to explore San Francisco without a car (highly recommended), or only have a short time planned in the city. If you’re wondering what the right amount of time is, check out my guide.
🔑 Staff: Friendly, helpful, there when you need them, but you probably won’t see them beyond check-in or Dirty Habit.
🏆 Best for: First-time visitors to San Francisco, business travelers, and visitors traveling to San Francisco without a car.
🚫 Not right for: While families are welcome, Hotel Zelos is in a highly urban area with traffic right outside the door.
🎁 Amenities: There is a small gym on the 6th floor with everything you need for a quick workout sesh. If you’re traveling with a dog, Hotel Zelos offers bowls and treats. The hotel also has valet parking for $55/night, which is reasonable compared to other nearby hotels in downtown San Francisco.

🛁 Rooms & Suites: The rooms at Hotel Zelos are modern and well-appointed. But the standout feature is their generous size, especially for such an urban area.
You can expect rooms to range from around 280 square feet for deluxe doubles and king rooms to more than 600 square feet for the 1-bedroom suites, which have separate living areas and workspaces.
Rooms also have plugs in all the right places (at the desk, next to beds), blackout curtains, good soundproofing, counter space in the bathrooms, and solid Wi-Fi.
The one thing Hotel Zelos rooms DO NOT have (sniff sniff) are coffee-and-tea setups in the rooms. Boo!
I am a serious coffee addict and there’s not even a kettle for those who like to bring their own tea bags and sip a cuppa before bed.
The restaurant offers free coffee and tea in the morning, but not until 7 a.m. so if you get up before the sun, have early meetings, or need to catch a flight, don’t expect to get coffee if you have to leave at 6 a.m.

🥘 Drinks & Dining: There’s no lobby to linger in at Hotel Zelos, so it’s 5th-floor Dirty Habit, the hotel’s atmospheric on-site restaurant and bar, where guests gather.
With a creative international menu and extensive cocktail, mocktails, and whiskey selections, it’s a great hangout for guests who want to eat and drink well close to their beds.
Their menu has a good blend of international-inspired dishes and comfort food. The milkbread is a must, as is the lumpia and tuna tartar in sesame cones.
The outdoor terrace is a plus, too, with heat lamps and fire tables making it possible to sit outside year-round.
🗺️ Neighborhood: This is definitely in the heart of Market Street/SoMA so it’s urban. There are buses and streetcars right outside the front door, and some typical city grit. What it lacks in neighborhood charm, you get back in walkability to museums, Union Square, Yerba Buena Gardens, Moscone Center, and transit hubs that will take you anywhere you want to go.
👀 Nearby attractions: Yerba Buena Gardens, SFMoMA, Union Square, Powell Street Cable Cars, BART, and Oracle Park (take their behind-the-scenes tour if there is no game!)
💫 Highlights: Large rooms, affordable (by SF standards) pricing, onsite restaurant and bar with outdoor space, easy walkable location.

❤️🔥 My heartthrobs: Dirty Habit and its off-street outdoor space is a nice-to-have in downtown SF, generously-sized rooms, walkable location.
💔 My heartbreaks: The $35/ day amenity fee that does NOT include in-room coffee.
