nice, france, umbrellas against the blue sky

City breaks are the ‘it’ trend among the French

Norstat’s exclusive study for easyHotel shows that city breaks are now a preferred escape for the French, a trend driven by a desire for flexibility, affordability, and ease of trip organization.

French travelers across all generations are taking part, from young professionals to couples and families. The survey found that 100% of respondents have taken at least one city break in the past two years.

Typically lasting two or three nights, these stays address a growing need for travel that’s in tune with the busy rhythms of modern life, offering a chance to get away without heavy planning or breaking the bank.

While Paris leads the list, destinations such as Lyon, Bordeaux, and Nice are on the rise, reflecting interest in urban destinations and a desire to rediscover their home turf.

Nice is also an excellent base for exploring the French Riviera and its amazing beaches.

It’s a trend that feels familiar well beyond France, too.

More American travelers seem drawn to cities where a long weekend can still feel transporting. According to a new Airbnb 2026 travel trend report, Gen Z travelers are opting for one- to two-day trips that pack a full vacation into a single weekend.

San Francisco, with its eclectic neighborhoods, scenic viewpoints, free outdoor concerts, and family-friendly hotels, fits that mood well.

Given how easy it is to combine sightseeing with easy day trips within 3 hours of the city, San Francisco is a top choice for travelers.
