Fall in San Francisco isn’t all Fleet Week flyovers and pumpkin patches.

On October 24, 2026, Ocean Beach becomes a giant outdoor art studio for the 44th annual Leap Sandcastle Classic, Northern California’s largest sandcastle competition.

And…it’s FREE.

Teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors and local students have just a few hours to turn piles of sand into elaborate sculptures—some decidedly more ambitious than the lopsided bucket-and-shovel castles of childhood.

This year’s theme, “Bay Area Vibes,” takes inspiration from the region’s music, art, culture, architecture, and landmarks.

Building runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony, with live music and performances throughout the day. The event is free to attend, and proceeds raised by participating teams and sponsors support arts education for Bay Area students.

Getting there: Public transportation is highly recommended, as parking at Ocean Beach is limited.

Take the N Judah westbound to its final stop at Judah Street and La Playa Street/Ocean Beach. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk north along the beach to Balboa Street. The N runs through downtown, including Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, and Civic Center stations.
